First Encounter:
During the First Encounter, you are reading the book.
- When you come to a target word, stop, point to the picture of the target word and say the word. Remind the children that it is one of their new words and define the word for the children.
- So, if you read the sentence, “The tower is where the wizard lives,” you would say, “Tower, that is one of our new words; a tower is a tall building.” Then, you would continue reading the story.
- When the target word appears multiple times in the story, it is important for you to just pick one place to recall the definition, which may not be the first time it appears.
Do your target words appear more than one time in the text? |
- When choosing where to recall the word and definition, you should consider whether or not there is a good illustration of the target word on that page to which you can point.
Where would you choose to recall a target word’s definition? Keep in mind the word needs to appear in the text and must be shown in an illustration. |

- If there are no pictures of the target word where the text appears, you can flip to a page where there is a picture of the target word.

It is important to sit in an area where all children are able to see the pictures and can be easily encouraged to participate in the story and strategy.
