Throughout this step, you will observe two VPK teachers demonstrating Dialogic Reading in a five day sequence. The five days are meant to be a guideline. You can begin a five day sequence any day of the week. The focus of Dialogic Reading is to create dialogue about vocabulary illustrated in the book. As you will see in the following video, the only day children hear the book read completely is Day 1. After that, the teacher prompts dialogue in order to increase children’s vocabulary and oral language skills.
Remember, planning ahead is a crucial step in the Dialogic Reading strategy. You are strongly encouraged to choose specific books and read them ahead of time. After reading the book without the children, you should also choose target vocabulary words and plan possible questions.
The printable Observation Sheet can be printed out to guide you as you watch two VPK teachers, Lisa and Kathy, with the children.
