Learning the Strategy

Book Embedded Vocabulary Instruction is a type of interactive shared reading that incorporates explicit vocabulary instruction within the shared reading experience. Before implementing Book Embedded Vocabulary Instruction, you should read through your chosen book and pick four to five target vocabulary words. The words need to have a realistic picture associated with them AND be present in the text. A realistic picture is a picture that accurately represents the concept of the target word. You should choose words that are unfamiliar but relevant and meaningful to the children. The group size for Book Embedded Vocabulary Instruction can vary, but it is best to implement the strategy with approximately ten children.

Please watch as Dr. Phillips discusses the importance of choosing the correct type of book for Book Embedded Vocabulary Instruction.
