Planning:
You
should pick a book that has multiple realistic pictures, and the target
words should appear in the text.
For examples of appropriate books, see the Booklist document in the Using the Strategy step of this folder.
Does your book have realistic pictures? Are the labels for the pictures you chose found in the text? |
- Once an appropriate book is chosen, you can choose four to five appropriate target vocabulary words from the book. The target words should be words that are relevant and meaningful to the children.
- After choosing four to five target words, you should create child-friendly definitions of the words that the children will easily understand. To get help creating child friendly definitions, see the Write Definitions document in the Using the Strategy step.
- Once you have chosen the words and developed child-friendly definitions, you may place the bookmarks in the book to have them ready to use when Pre-Teaching vocabulary and then reading the book with the children.
- Bookmarks are a helpful tool while using this strategy as they will remind you what to say and give the page number where the word can be found in each of the steps. Bookmark Templates and bookmark directions are available in the Using the Strategy step.
Now, let’s watch Michelle, a VPK teacher, as she begins the process for Learning the Strategy.

You just watched Michelle engage in the Planning session. Now, go through the process with the book you selected.
- Go back and look through your book for two to three target words.
- Take a few minutes to write a child-friendly definition for one of your words.
- How would you create a bookmark for the book you chose for your lesson?
After preparation and Planning, you are ready to begin the second part of Book Embedded Vocabulary Instruction, Pre-Teach.
