Rich or Simplified Language

When planning to teach a lesson, one of the questions that you want to think about is HOW to teach the lesson and what type of language you should use when teaching a particular concept or skill.   It is important to be mindful of the language you use. When introducing a new skill, you want to simplify the language, but when engaging in conversation throughout the day, you want to use rich language for children.  Think about the differences in how you use language with your children as you watch the next clip by Dr. Argüelles.

Key PointKEY POINT:  We may be the only model of the English language for some children.

Since you may be the only model of the English language for your English language learner, you will want to be sure to use correct and complete sentences, precise language, and student-friendly language when explaining the meaning of words. Using multiple examples of words is very helpful for English language learners and supports them in learning the language.
