Working with Young English Language Learners

Learning occurs when children engage in well-planned classroom experiences that are designed with the unique needs of individual children in mind. In this section, we will explore ways to use purposeful planning to address the needs of all the children in your VPK classroom. In order to meet the language needs of the English language learner, you will need to have an understanding of the different components of language as they relate to second-language learners when you begin to plan for instruction. This section addresses the ways attention to children’s language development can improve instruction and maximize learning, and includes strategies that you can use in your VPK classroom to promote learning and language development on the part of your English language learners.

ObjectiveThe following objectives will be covered in this section:

    • Explain the need for purposeful planning to support the needs of young English language learners.
    • Examine the specific areas of language as they relate not only to English language learners but to all VPK children.
    • Identify instructional strategies that facilitate learning experiences of young English language learners.
