Receptive and Expressive Language

Something else to keep in mind as an important instructional strategy is to ask children to repeat back to you key words that you are using in the lesson.  In the next clip, Dr. Argüelles refers to this as "echo." Having the children repeat back the word is a good habit to get into and provides additional opportunities for children to remember the word. It also gives you an opportunity to know if the English language learner knows how to make a particular sound in a word.  In order to simplify a task, choose words with sounds that the English language learner is able to pronounce with ease. Dr. Argüelles explains more about this in the next clip.

Key PointKEY POINT:  Don’t make the task harder than it needs to be.

Let’s review, English language learners often understand more than they can express so you don’t need to wait until a second-language learner is speaking English to begin instruction. You can also use a variety of instructional strategies to support the engagement of an English language learner during instruction – like thumbs up or thumbs down response.  Using echo or asking children to repeat key words back to you supports the learning of children who are English language learners.
