Planning for Instruction with Children who are English Language Learners

Taking time to plan for developmentally appropriate activities is essential for a program to be successful. Planning is a process whereby teachers make decisions based on their knowledge about the children in their classroom, the content that is appropriate for the age group, and the expectations for the specific subject or developmental domain. Planning that is purposeful and focused on the unique needs of young English language learners is critical for their success in the VPK classroom.

In this section, we will be addressing specifically the language development of VPK children and how to think about that as you plan for instruction. The first step in purposeful planning is to ask yourself a few questions about exactly what it is that you want your children to learn.
