Director’s Corner/Making Connections

Final Note About What a Director Can Do

Your knowledge and commitment to the children and families you serve are your most valuable and best resources. Transforming and supporting the efforts of your staff as they strive to create a culturally responsive and respectful environment where children and staff can continue to develop English language skills will be an ongoing effort. Remember, you will always find solutions if you and your staff take the time to ask, “What would make me feel welcome and supported if I were an English language learner coming to this program?” In the next printable document, you may be able to get some ideas of how to work with your teachers and support them in creating  culturally sensitive environments.

LET'S REFLECT

Let's ReflectHow does my classroom support the English language learner?

What are some of the materials in my classroom that provide a multicultural view of the world?

How does the design of my environment meet the needs of all children and especially support the English language learner?

What are some ways that I can create a positive social environment for my second-language learners?

Moving OnNow that we know about how the physical environment supports the English language learner, in Section 4 we will take a close look at the instructional practices that can make a huge difference in the quality of learning that takes place.  Dr. Maria Elena Argüelles is featured in this section. You will view several clips of her discussing important instructional strategies.
