Culturally Sensitive Classrooms

You have read and seen many examples of how VPK classrooms can support the English language learner. Teachers are the key to providing a learning environment that meets the needs of all their children. Providing a culturally sensitive classroom helps the English language learner have a sense of belonging as well as prepares him/her for the next step in school, which is to be successful when entering kindergarten. In the following video you will hear two VPK instructors talk about how they provide an environment that supports their English language learners.

The VPK instructors provided us with their experiences and how they strive to maintain a culturally sensitive classroom.  In the following printable documents you will read several case studies of teachers who speak only English or only Spanish or who are bilingual.  What would you do if you spoke only English or Spanish and  had children who are speakers of other languages in your classroom? Click on the links below to read how each teacher was able to meet this challenge.
