LET'S REFLECT
What did the teacher do to promote participation of young children who are English language learners in this classroom?
What kind of nonverbal strategies did I see the teachers using?
VPK classrooms are communities in which young children interact with their peers and adults. A positive social and emotional environment that meets the developmental needs of all children is one that makes everyone feel that they are important members of the community. This is particularly important with the child who is an English language learner. Prekindergarten instructors and other supportive adults in the room must closely monitor the children’s interactions, and be ready to intervene to provide instruction, guidance, and support as needed.
