Sources of Information

As a VPK teacher or provider, you may already have a large amount of valuable information about the children in your class. As you progress through this course, you will see how important it is that you have as much information as possible about your children who are English language learners and how this information will help you enrich their educational experiences. When gathering information about children who are English language learners and their families, you may rely on formal and/or informal sources. No matter what the sources, asking the right questions will help you determine the unique characteristics of the children in your class.

Your center or school may also have instruments such as questionnaires and surveys to collect information about young children who may be English language learners. Check with the director of your center and find out about the tools that are used. Remember, as you collect information about the children, you are better able to assist them and promote acquisition of English language skills.
