Learning the Strategy

Once again, you have the opportunity to participate in a matching activity as you review the three activities that you have just seen and read about. Below are three scenarios describing VPK teachers who Present Vocabulary with Pictures or Objects, Use Specific Language, and Create Silly Situations. As you read the scenarios, try to match them to the appropriate activity.

During an art activity, Mrs. Smith tells the children that they are going to use chalk and stencils to make pictures of flowers. As she is demonstrating the activity for the children, she shows them the chalk and stencils, pairing the actual objects with the new vocabulary words “chalk” and “stencils.” Before allowing the children to explore the materials, she describes how to make drawings of flowers using the chalk and flower stencils.

Tasha was asked to put away toys in the housekeeping center. Mrs. Smith notices that Tasha is having difficulty putting objects in their appropriate places. She prompts Tasha by using precise language and says, “Please put the pots and pans on the shelf under the sink.”

Before naptime, Mrs. Smith usually asks all of her children to take their shoes off. One day while the children are napping, Mrs. Smith puts a small toy in each of the children’s shoes. When the children wake up and put their shoes back on, they find the toys and make comments about them. Mrs. Smith also uses this opportunity to have each child tell one thing about the toy they found to another child.
