Learning the Strategy

Now you have the opportunity to participate in a matching activity as you review the three activities that you have just seen and read about. As you read the scenarios try to match them to the appropriate activity.

During free play, Mrs. Smith’s children get to choose which center they would like to play in. Jaden has a hard time making a choice. Mrs. Smith takes a hat from the Dramatic Play center and crayons from the Art Center and holds them in front of Jaden. Then Mrs. Smith prompts Jaden to make a choice between the two centers (e.g., “Would you like to play in the Art Center (shows the crayons) or in the Dramatic Play center (shows the hat)?”). Jaden points to the crayons and says, “I want to play in the art center.” Mrs. Smith walks Jaden over to the Art Center and helps her to begin drawing a picture.

  1. Narrate Events is the correct answer.
  1. Oops! Narrate Events is the correct answer.
Brice is playing in the sand table with trucks and bridges. Mrs. Smith knows that Brice is not much of a “talker,” so she begins to narrate his play by talking about what she sees Brice doing. Mrs. Smith says, “I like how you are connecting the two pieces of road to make a bridge. Look how the car drives up the bridge and then down the bridge, right into that big pile of sand! Crash! Where did the car go? Oh, look! The car is buried under the sand!”
