What key strategies engage English language learners?

Dr. Argüelles demonstrates in her next clip the following five instructional strategies that can be incorporated into any lesson and provide a firm foundation for learning:

  1. Provide a prompt – put your request of the children in context.
  2. Give wait time – English language learners need processing time to translate.
  3. Give a cue - teacher gives a signal that indicates that she is ready for the children to provide a physical response.
  4. Children respond.
  5. Teacher provides immediate feedback.

In the following video, Dr. Argüelles talks about this lesson using response cards with letters.  Response cards can also be happy/sad faces, yes/no cards, or red/green cards.  This would not be an initial lesson on letter sounds.
