Positive
self-esteem is a factor that greatly influences a child’s performance.
When children feel proud of their families, of their heritage and culture,
they are more likely to feel good about themselves and have a healthy
sense of self-esteem. A classroom that reflects the children’s cultures
and languages validates and welcomes the child. Finding things that are
familiar makes children feel that they are important. Singing songs with
familiar tunes and lyrics or in the children’s home language, hanging
posters with images of places from the home countries or cultures, and
sharing stories with characters representative of the children’s home
culture all help to promote positive self-concept.
