Labeling objects and equipment with names in both English and the children’s home language provides visual clues and promotes learning words. Including a photograph or drawing along with the written word facilitates the children’s ability to connect meaning with an object. The words should be written using different colors to distinguish between the different languages. It’s important to honor all the cultures and languages that may be spoken in your room. Remember, however, that the reason we label objects is to expose children to print. Labels are a tool for growing language and building a foundation for print awareness. However, a print rich environment consists of more than having an abundance of labels and signs. The teacher should be referring to the labels and signs throughout the day and interacting with the print to model for the children how print works.
