Second-Language Acquisition

In the following activity you can print out several representative profiles of English language learners in VPK classrooms. The teacher, Mrs. Gillespie, is a seasoned preschool teacher at a school with children from various backgrounds. Kim is from China and his family speaks no English. Julia was born in Mexico and moved to the United States when she was three years old. Roberto’s mother is from Chile and his father is from the United States. All of the children have something in common; however, their diverse backgrounds are unique. Kim and Julia are learning two different languages sequentially while Roberto began his life simultaneously learning two languages. In the following profiles you will read how Mrs. Gillespie studies the backgrounds of her English language learners, evaluates their knowledge of English, sets goals for their success in the classroom and monitors their progress. Click on each of the profiles and learn the details of each child’s language acquisition journey.
