The Seven Domains of the VPK Education Standards

Florida's VPK Education Standards include seven domains: Physical Health, Approaches to Learning, Social and Emotional Development, Language and Communication, Emergent Literacy, Cognitive Development and General Knowledge, and Motor Development. Each domain describes what four-year-old children should know and be able to do at the end of the VPK year, and includes indicators that provide realistic expectations of how four-year-old children develop. Together, the standards create a common framework and language to ensure the high-quality prekindergarten learning opportunities occur for all of Florida’s children.

The standards assist providers in understanding the sequence of development across multiple domains and the important factors that influence development. As a director, it is important for you to be familiar with the standards, and be available to provide technical assistance to staff as they select developmentally appropriate methods to integrate these standards into the program’s curricula.
