Unit 1: VPK Organizational Leadership and Management

Introduction

Welcome to the first unit of the VPK Director Credential Course. This unit is designed to help you gain an understanding of the process of supporting your VPK staff. It also examines the importance of maintaining a balance between management and leadership in a VPK setting.

Each section of this unit will provide you with practical information and a variety of resources related to the topic. As you scroll down the page, you will be asked to reflect on each section as it relates to your facility. Ask yourself where you are now and what strategies you can use to develop each of the areas presented. Some sections will have directed questions to guide you as you read the material. When you click on the related links, you will go to sites with additional information on the subject being discussed.

We will begin by reviewing the research that guides this program for young children in our state. After you review the overall objectives of this unit, scroll down to the first section, where we will begin with VPK research-based practices.

Unit Objectives/Competencies
In order to lead a high quality VPK education program by understanding and modeling best practices, VPK directors will be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  • explore the importance of balance between management and leadership skills in VPK settings
  • describe the characteristics of effective coaching for use with VPK instructors
