Section 2.2
Integration of the VPK Education Standards into Instructional Practice

Introduction

The Florida Voluntary Prekindergarten Education Standards were formally adopted by the State Board of Education on March 15, 2005. A Panel of Experts convened to review and revise the 2002 School Readiness Performance Standards and used this document as a starting point in developing the Florida VPK Standards. The Florida VPK Education Standards describe skills that four-year-old children should know and be able to do by the end of their prekindergarten year and are designed to guide prekindergarten administrators and teachers in designing and implementing appropriate early learning environments.

The purposes of the standards include:

  • creating a shared framework and common language to understand how four-year-old children learn and grow
  • setting realistic expectations for these children
  • understanding the sequence of development across multiple domains and the important factors that influence development
  • creating safe, appropriate, and stimulating environments for four-year-old children
  • guiding the selection of toys, curricula, equipment, and materials
  • improving classroom instruction
  • providing pre-service and in-service training for prekindergarten instructors
  • refining professional preparation programs
