This training is organized into five units:
Introduction, Language and Communication, Emergent
Reading, Emergent Writing, and Environment.
Each unit, beginning with Language and Communication
includes the same format. You will begin each
unit with an Introduction, Objectives, and Questions
to Think About as you read through the text.
Along the way, there will also be Checking your
Understanding activities to make sure that you
understand the information.
As you proceed through the units the main topics
will be coded with an icon to maintain continuity
and familiarity with the process.

KEY COMPONENTS – This section provides background knowledge and research on the subject that is being introduced. It also includes reference to the standards that apply to the information. |

KEY INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES – This section will provide instructional strategies that will help you when implementing the course information in your classroom. |

PULLING IT ALL TOGETHER – This section will direct you to the video where you will see Florida’s VPK instructors doing a lesson to demonstrate various instructional practices. You will be guided by Dr. Lynda Hayes who will comment on the video before you view the lesson and then she will conclude the videos with additional information. You will then be directed to complete the Activity for the unit. |

ACTIVITY – The
activities were created to provide you
with a way to practice what you have learned.
Some of them ask you to use books and activities
that you have used with children and make
notes about how you can use this material
to apply some of the strategies you learned
in the units. |
At the end of each unit there will be a Reflecting
section in which you will revisit the questions
that began the unit and make some notes about
what you learned. Finally, the Moving On section
will sum up and focus your learning for the next
unit.
When you have finished the course, there will
be information to direct you on the procedure
for taking the course assessment. Upon successful completion of this assessment, you will receive a certificate, which verifies your completion of this course for 5 hours of inservice credit. The Department of Education (DOE) is in the
process of confirming the availability of Continuing Education Credits (CEUs)
to be awarded for those who complete this 5-hour
VPK Emergent Literacy course, successfully complete
the end of the course assessment for inservice
credit, AND, successfully complete the High-Stakes
Assessment (required for CEUs). The high stakes
assessment will be available at the Department of Children and Families (DCF) testing
centers throughout the state in 2006. If you
