Introduction to Emergent Literacy

Welcome

Welcome to your introductory training on the new Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Emergent Literacy course. To review the hardware/software requirements for operating this course, please click here.

You are encouraged to take the opportunity throughout this course to reflect and spend time applying the information when you plan for your prekindergarten class. Research is clear that effective preschool education can make a tremendous difference in achieving Florida’s goal of every child reading on grade level by the end of third grade.

An independent study version of this course is available, in both English and Spanish, and facilitated (instructor-led class) sessions will be available beginning in 2007. Please contact your VPK regional facilitator to receive a copy of the independent study packet or to inquire about scheduled facilitated courses. Go to VPK Regional Facilitators, and click on your area of the state for your VPK regional facilitator’s contact information.

Please note that the assessment is only available online. A score of at least 80% correct is required in order to pass. The assessment can be taken up to four times. If you do not receive a score of 80% or higher after four attempts, you will be unable to access the exam for six (6) months. After 6 months, the system will be reset, allowing two (2) additional attempts. If a score of 80% or better is not obtained at that time, you will not be able to access the exam for one (1) year.
