Then ask youself these questions:

  • What kind of information did the VPK instructor collect while the child was attending her program?
  • What strategies did the VPK instructor use in sharing this information with the kindergarten instructor? The child’s family?
  • What questions did the kindergarten instructor ask?
  • How will this information assist the kindergarten instructor in her preparing for the child’s entry into her program?
  • What types of activities did each instructor plan to create a smooth, seamless transition from one program to another?
  • How will this impact the child? The family?

The transition from a VPK classroom to a kindergarten classroom is an exciting time for children, parents, and teachers. An effective transition plan helps to ease a child's journey into a new program before, during, and after the move. Parents and teachers should work together to ensure valuable information is shared about the child and that kindergarten program goals and expectations are clearly identified and communicated. It is important to include all of the available parties including families, VPK and kindergarten teachers, program directors, and local agencies to identify and implement an appropriate transition plan for children in your VPK program.
