2.4.1
Importance of Screening and Assessment in VPK Programs

Florida's VPK Education Standards (2005) provide guidance about what children should know and be able to do upon kindergarten entry. In order to ensure that all children have an opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge necessary in each of the domain areas, teachers should have a clear understanding of the developmental levels and individual needs of the children in their classrooms. Systematic screening and assessment can provide the information to gauge progress toward the goals of the program and to make modifications and accommodations within the learning environment when necessary. Screening and assessment strategies can provide valuable information to teachers, parents, and administrators about the impact that instruction is having on the growth and development of children in VPK programs.
