Self-Assessment: Which am I—Manager or Leader?
The following self-assessment is taken from "Learning to Lead” by Warren Bennis and Joan Goldsmith. The Leadership Assessment Inventory includes a list of characteristics or attributes related to management and leadership. As you review each set of characteristics, think about your own style – how you approach a challenge, interact with staff, make decisions, etc. Select the number between one (1) and five (5) that best represents where you fall on the continuum. Scores in the lower end of the range (1, 2) generally reflect skills as a “manager” while scores in the higher end of the range (4, 5) generally reflect skills as a “leader.” Once you complete the self-assessment, take a moment to reflect on the results and answer questions below.
- What are your strengths?
- Are you primarily a manager or a leader?
- What areas do you need to develop?
- What strategies will you use to develop these skills?
- What can you do today to move toward these goals?
