Section 1.1
Leadership and Management Skills in VPK Programs

Introduction

Your role as a VPK director is varied. You need many different skills to manage and operate a quality VPK program. You are called upon to manage the day-to-day operation of the center, which includes such activities as completing VPK forms, ordering materials, and hiring staff with the appropriate credentials for the VPK program. In addition, you serve as a leader, guiding and coaching staff, participating in community events, and setting the vision and goals for your program. Both skill sets—management and leadership—are necessary for the successful operation of a VPK program.

In this section you will identify the characteristics of a manager and those of a leader. Then you will complete a self-assessment. Are you primarily a manager or a leader?
