Section 1.2
Effective Coaching in VPK Programs

Introduction

One of the primary roles in directing a VPK program is to support and assist with the professional development of your staff. This can be done in a variety of ways, one of which is coaching. Coaching has been shown to be one of the most powerful forms of staff development because it is a job-embedded model. Coaching builds on what an instructor already knows and the instructor and director work together to set goals for the coaching process.

The coaching model includes establishing goals, modeling best practices, and conducting observations with feedback and reflection. It works best for the director to establish the coaching process as a regular part of the staff development activities in the program. The coaching process is an individualized approach used to grow instructors as professionals. The role of the director is to guide instructors as they engage in a reflective process about their teaching practices.

As you review this unit, you will read about effective modeling and coaching strategies and view a video demonstration of a coaching session between a VPK director and one of her staff members.
