Review of Language

In the Language and Communication section we discussed important environmental considerations to aid in the growth of children’s language and their use of language. Let’s review these considerations:

  SIT and STAY and TALK
Your goal should be to increase the amount and quality of adult/child interactions during the school day. Remember to talk with every child every day.
  CREATE SMALL SPACES
Children need to play and talk. Spaces that hold only three or four children promote increased language use and dialogue.
  MOTIVATE WITH STORY
RETELLING
Show children how to retell stories by providing appropriate supplies such as flannel boards, puppets, and story props. It is also important to schedule time and create spaces for children to retell stories.
  DIRECT TEACHING OF
THE MEANINGS OF
UNFAMILIAR WORDS
When planning and thinking about the books you read to children, select some good, rich vocabulary words. Be sure to include child-friendly definitions and talk about these words.
  INCLUDE EXPERIENCES
IN SCIENCE AND
MATHEMATICS
Thematic science and mathematics units provide rich reasons and plenty of content for discussion and vocabulary growth.
